Coach Josh Jones

High School Head Coach

Josh Jones will enter his sixth season as Head Coach for the Glenvar Soccer Program. In his first year, the Glenvar varsity soccer team was able to collect the Three-Rivers District championship, along with the programs first ever Region C championship. The team reached the state semifinals with a 13-1-0 record falling to Graham High School 2-3 in sudden death overtime. In year two, the soccer program was able to repeat as District and Region champions as well as reach the state final losing 2-3 to Clarke County High School. The 2022 team finished the season 20-1-1. In year three, the soccer program was able to three-peat as District and Region champions and claim the programs first State Title in program history by defeating Clarke County 1-0 and finishing the year with a 20-1-1 record.  In year four, the soccer program was able to four-peat as District and Region champions as well as defend their state title with a 1-0 victory over Radford in the state final. The team finished the year with a 22-0-0 record. In year five, the soccer program finished 23-0-0 and was able to five-peat as District and Region champions as well as three-peat as state champions with a 2-0 win over Bruton in the state final and claim a program record 19 shutouts! Coach Jones currently holds a 98-3-2 head coaching record at Glenvar High School. Jones also briefly assisted the Glenvar Middle School and High School programs in the spring of 2020. Coach Jones now has obtained a high school coaching record of 367-75-32 in his 23 years of head coaching.

Jones a native of Vinton, Virginia spent eighteen seasons as Head Coach for the Salem High School Girls Program where he compiled a 269-72-30 record. Including seven District/Conference Titles, five Regional Titles, three Regional Runner-Ups, two State Runner-Up, and one State Title; as well as a berth in the VHSL Group AA/4A State Semi-Finals in 2002, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2013, 2016, and 2017.  The Spartans also reached the VHSL Group AA/4A State Quarterfinals in 2012 and the final eight in 2015. Also, throughout Jones’ stint at Salem, 29 players have continued their soccer careers at various collegiate levels.


He also coaches for the Salem Sabres Program in the fall. This past fall he coached the Boys U-15 and U-19 boy's teams. Jones, a two time All-State Defender for William Byrd High School in Vinton, Virginia (he graduated from there in 1998) also earned All-Conference honors both his freshman and sophomore years while playing for Ferrum College in Ferrum, Virginia. 


The rest of Jones' coaching resume includes Director of Coaching and Executive Director for the Salem Sabres Futbol Club for the past nineteen years, five years of coaching with the Roanoke Star Program, Assistant Coach for both the Varsity and JV Programs at Salem High School (Spring 2001), two stints as a staff coach at the Ferrum College Summer Soccer Camp and Carson-Newman College Summer Soccer Camp.


Jones holds a degree in Exercise, Sport, and Health Education with an emphasis in Teaching from Radford University (2004) in Radford, Virginia.
Jones, a holder of an NSCAA National Diploma, resides in Salem with his wife, Kelly and two boys, Jackson and Kiptyn.

Coach Ryan Kennedy

High School Assistant Coach/Goalkeeper Coach

Ryan Kennedy enters his first season with the Glenvar Highlanders Soccer Program. He joins our program with a well-rounded background in soccer coaching, athletic performance, and player development. With over 15 years of experience coaching at the high school level, he’s been deeply involved in all aspects of team preparation — from practice planning and opponent scouting to mentoring athletes on and off the field.

 

Coach Kennedy is a former certified strength and conditioning specialist who has designed training programs for youth, collegiate, and professional athletes. He also serves as a Referee with the Roanoke Valley Soccer Officials Association (RVSOA), Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (VISOA), and as an Assistant Referee in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), giving him a strong command of the game’s laws and on-field dynamics.

 

Coach Kennedy is currently employed at the VA and resides in Roanoke with his wife, Amy and daughter Margo.

Coach Christian Housh

High School Assistant Coach

Christian Housh enters his first season with the Glenvar Highlanders Soccer Program. Coach Housh is a former graduate of Glenvar High School and participated in our soccer program in 2022. He helped lead our team to a District and Region Championship as well as an appearance in the State Final. Coach Housh played in the midfield for our program and was an excellent ball winner.​

​

Coach Housh also has experience coaching at the club level with Salem Sabres and has coached indoor soccer through local soccer programs.

​

Coach Housh currently attends Liberty University and is pursuing a major in Biomedical Science. He also currently works in the Dietary Department at Good Samaritan Hospice Health and resides in Roanoke.

Coach Logan Boyd

High School Assistant/Goalkeeper Coach

Logan Boyd enters his sixth season with the Glenvar Highlanders Soccer Program.

​

Coach Boyd works on our staff as an Assistant Coach and Goalkeeper Coach. Coach Boyd will spend time working with all players in our program but will pay special attention to our goalkeepers. He has obtained a goalkeeper diploma and is excited to continue to be a part of the Glenvar soccer program.

​

Coach Boyd also has experience coaching at the club level with Salem Sabres as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach for three years.

​

Coach Boyd graduated from Salem High School and Radford University with a major in Exercise, Sport and Health Education. He currently teaches Health and PE at Clearbrook Elementary School and resides in Roanoke with his wife, Erin and daughter, Sailor.

Coach Rich Drew

JV Head Coach

Coach Drew enters his fourth season with the Glenvar Highlanders Soccer Program. This will be his first season as our JV Head Coach.

​

Coach Drew has several years of experience coaching at the club and high school levels. He also helped guide our girls to a state title in 2022 as an assistant on staff. This past fall, he coached in the Salem Sabres program and served as the U17 boys Head Coach.

 

Coach Drew works with our JV players in helping them develop and enhance their abilities within our program. He has been on staff the last three years our JV team has won the district championship. We are excited to have him continue his role within our soccer program.

Coach Trevor Shannon

JV Assistant Coach

Coach Shannon will enter his first season with the Glenvar Highlanders Soccer Program. He brings a strong background in both soccer and public service to the program. Coach Shannon has coached with the Salem Sabres program for 8 years.  He has three years of experience coaching high school girls soccer at Salem High School as both a JV head coach and JV assistant coach, where he focused on player development, teamwork, and competitive growth.  In addition, he spent two years coaching middle School Soccer at Glenvar Middle School, helping young athletes build foundational skills and a love for the game. 

 

Beyond the field, Coach currently serves as the Battalion Chief of Emergency Management and Special Operations for the City of Roanoke Fire-EMS Department.  His leadership role emphasizes preparation, accountability, and calm decision-making qualities that he carries into his coaching approach.  He holds a United Soccer Coaches Foundation Goalkeeper Level 1 training certificate, bringing specialized knowledge to player development.  Coach is also a licensed EMT-I, underscoring his commitment to athlete safety and well-being.

 

Coach Shannon lives in Salem with his wife Jenn, and two boys, Tyler and Jacob.

Coach Chandler Sutphin

JV Assistant Coach

Coach Sutphin will enter his second season with the Glenvar Highlanders Soccer Program. 

​

Coach Sutphin will spend time assisting our program in numerous ways. His organizational skills, along with coaching background will help our program at all levels.

 

Coach Sutphin currently works for Lucas Therapies as a Physcial Therapist Assistant and resides in Salem with his wife, Abbey.

Coach Bob Van Gerven

GHS Men's Soccer Ambassador

Coach Van Gerven will enter his tenth year with our Glenvar Soccer progarm and fifth year with our high school staff. Coach Van Gerven spent four years as our JV Head Coach! He complied a 62-4-2 record in four seasons including four straight JV District Championships!

​

Coach Van Gerven served as Head Coach for five seasons for our Glenvar Middle School soccer team. He was able to turn our middle school squad into consistent winning team and establish a firm foundation for our program that continues today!

​

Coach Van Gerven also has several years of club coaching experience with the Salem Sabres FC program.  Coach Van Gerven holds a USSC license and has been coaching youth in the Roanoke Valley since 2012. He also enjoys playing in the adult 35+ soccer league along with pickleball.

​

Coach Van Gerven was born and raised in the Netherlands where he grew up with soccer as the main sport. He currently is a technology teacher at Hidden Valley Middle School and resides in Roanoke with his wife, Michelle and two children, Grace and Kees.

Justin Kuzmich.HEIC

Coach Justin Kuzmich

Middle School Head Coach

Justin Kuzmich will enter his fifth year with the Glenvar Soccer Program. He will continue the role of Head Coach for the Middle School program where he has tallied four straight winning seasons! In his first year, he collected a record of 11-1-3 and earned a 9-4-4 record the following season in 2023. In 2024, the middle school team accomplished a 11-3-2 record. Last year, our middle school team accomplished an outstanding 15-2-0 overall record! Coach Kuzmich is now 46-10-9 as our middle school coach. He is very excited to continue to work with the kids, school, and Glenvar community!

​

This past fall he coached for Salem Sabres FC soccer club. He served as Assistant Coach for our U15 boys team and U11 girls team.

Coach Scott Geddes

Middle School Assistant Coach

Coach Geddes will enter his tenth year as assistant coach for our middle school program. His experience and knowledge of the game has helped provide our middle school soccer teams great success in the past. He looks forward to working with Coach Kuzmich to continue that success!
